The 2008-2009 season kicked off with Manchester United clinching a shoot-out win over a rather unimpressive Portsmouth side. United were dominant throughout the game, but could not get the ball past keeper James without the 42-goal scorer Cristiano Ronaldo. United have to come to terms with it, Rooney might not play the first few games, Ronaldo might not get to play 5-10 games. Giggs partnered Tevez in what was an aggressive but not-on-target strike force.
Time to wake up - Harry. Portsmouth’s much talked strike force of Defoe and Crouch, worth 18 million pounds could not even get a single attempt on target. United defense and midfield was right up to the expectation, but that does not offer any excuse for Defoe and Crouch. It will be a crucial season for the England strikers to prove their worth.
The game went into penalty shoot-out and 3 of the 4 Portsmouth players missed the target. It is the second successive Penalty shoot-out win for United after their victory over Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final at Moscow.
Overall, a rather un-impressive start for both the teams.

Spain steamrolled Russia in the second semifinal today to set up a date with Germany on Sunday. Luis Aragones’ boys overcame a quiet start to the game to score three second half goals over Russia whose odds had been upped after the last two performances.
The Spaniards were a worried lot losing in-form striker David Villa to injury only 30 minutes into the game. But their bench strength carried them through, as Villa was replaced by Cesc Fabregas. The Gunner would go on to play a pivotal role in the Spanish resurgence after the break.
The Spanish conquest began five minutes after the restart, through Xavi Hernandez, who was setup by Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta. Russia seemed to have lost the plot even before Daniel Guiza scored Spain’s second in the 73rd minute, off a Fabregas assist. And ten minutes later, Fabregas turned provider again, this time to David Silva as Spain completed the rout over Guus Hiddink’s team.
Andrei Arshavin, who this blog had tipped to win his third successive man of the match award was strangely subdued. Was he already dreaming about his move to Barca? Did all the transfer speculation and the 20+ million valuations throw a spanner in the Russian works?

Germany are through to the final of the Euro 2008 after a thrilling match (preview) against Turkey which they won thanks to a 90th minute goal from defender Philip Lahm, just minutes after Semih Senturk had put Turkey on level terms.
The Battle of Basel was a seesaw, with Turkey drawing first blood through Ugur Boral in the 22nd minute, only for Bastian Schweinsteiger to equalize five minutes later. Miroslav Klose scored in the 79th minute capitalizing on an error by Rustu on a night in which all three German goals came from Bayern Munich players. That should have been enough, but the Turks came back as only they can. Eventually though, Joachim Low’s Germany turned out to be a bridge too far for Fatih Terim’s depleted side.

Who would have expected a dominating, thrilling and awesome display from the Turkish side, that had 8 main players suspended/injured. If I have to summarize the Turkish display in one word: Terrific.
Right from the word go, they were dominating, playing with ultra-confidence, free flow, like they had been there for ever. Kazim was very instrumental in their attach and the German defenders had a good tiring work out. Lehmann was not at his best allowing Boral to clinch a lead for the Turks. 4 minutes later, a superb run and co-ordination from Podolski and Schweinsteiger secured the equalizer for Germans. Klose got a good header for Germany that put them in lead with just 9 minutes to play for. And Turks, as they have done through out the tournament came up with a superb play that got them the equalizer. It was an excellent finish from Semih Senturk. It was 2-2 at 86th minute. Lahm who could be partially blamed for poor defending in this game, scored a stunner on 90th minute (his first goal since World cup opener), he could not find a better time to score.
The Turks should be proud of their display. They deserved to be in Finals.
