Arshavin flirts with Arsenal

Welcome back! Check out our new videos and news updates!

Andrei Arshavin, who had earlier said that he was only interested in a move to Catalunya, seems to have changed his mind over the past few days. Barcelona were priced out of a move for the Zenit St Petersburg and Russia playmaker, having made an offer in the region of just 15 million euros. This has whipped up Arsenal and Chelsea’s interest in a transfer for the Russian.

If Emmanuel Adebayor’s proposed move to AC Milan materializes, Arsenal would be in the money for launching a transfer bid for Arshavin. The player himself has been flirting rather openly with a move to Arsenal, having declared that he is a fan of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, and that he is “desperate” to join the North London club. Will Arsenal be able to beat Chelsea to Arshavin’s signature?

In some more latest transfer rumours from the Emirates, Arsenal are considering making a move for Liverpool target Gareth Barry from Aston Villa.

Transfer update and Top 5 Predictions

Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz took over as Portugal national team coach. Earlier in his career he had coached the U-21 Portugal national side and is now appointed as the replacement to Scolari who has joined Chelsea.

For Queiroz, the immediate target would be the FIFA world Cup 2010. What impact would this have on Ronaldo’s transfer saga? Ronaldo meanwhile will be sidelined for the next 3 months due to injury.

Peter Crouch sealed a move to Portsmouth joining Harry Redknapp for the third time in his career. Crouch will pair up with Defoe to form an all-England front line-up.

Top 5 predictions for this week

  1. Frank Lampard’s transfer to Inter Milan
  2. Ajax striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s move to Man Utd or Arsenal
  3. Robinho to Chelsea
  4. Arshavin going nowhere
  5. Ronaldinho to AC Milan

Barcelona priced out of Arshavin move

Russia’s Andrei Arshavin has become one of the biggest names in the summer transfer talk. The player, who played a stellar role in Russia’s progress in Euro 2008 had indicated earlier that he was interested in moving only to Barcelona.

However, the player’s club, Zenit St Petersburg, have confirmed that Barcelona’s offer of 15 million euros for the star of Guus Hiddink’s team does not meet their valuation of the playmaker. Arshavin is now linked with a movie to London, with Arsenal and Chelsea both showing great interest in the 27 year-old’s signature.

Chelsea’s financial muscle might be to their advantage, and so does Roman Abramovich’s presence - the Russian billionaire can land his countryman. But Arsenal, who have lost or are on the verge of losing some key players, might be where Arshavin prove a better fit.

Will Arshavin become a Gunner? Or will he give them the blues by joining Luiz-Felipe Scolari at Stamford Birdge?

Euro 2008 Semifinals: Russia 0 - 3 Spain

Video highlights

Spain steamrolled Russia in the second semifinal today to set up a date with Germany on Sunday. Luis Aragones’ boys overcame a quiet start to the game to score three second half goals over Russia whose odds had been upped after the last two performances.

The Spaniards were a worried lot losing in-form striker David Villa to injury only 30 minutes into the game. But their bench strength carried them through, as Villa was replaced by Cesc Fabregas. The Gunner would go on to play a pivotal role in the Spanish resurgence after the break.

The Spanish conquest began five minutes after the restart, through Xavi Hernandez, who was setup by Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta. Russia seemed to have lost the plot even before Daniel Guiza scored Spain’s second in the 73rd minute, off a Fabregas assist. And ten minutes later, Fabregas turned provider again, this time to David Silva as Spain completed the rout over Guus Hiddink’s team.

Andrei Arshavin, who this blog had tipped to win his third successive man of the match award was strangely subdued. Was he already dreaming about his move to Barca? Did all the transfer speculation and the 20+ million valuations throw a spanner in the Russian works?

Arsene Wenger facing stiff competition from Barcelona in getting his targets this summer. Barcelona might end up signing Euro sensation Arshavin, who is wanted by the Gunners. Will Adebayor stay at Emirates, or sign for AC Milan, who also want Didier Drogba. Drogba + Adebayor in a team… wooooo .. that would be terrific.

Lilian Thuram might head out to PSG.

Any news on Ronaldinho? No. Not yet.
