Barca receive bids for Ronaldinho

Welcome back! Check out our new videos and news updates!

Football player Ronaldinho was born in Porto A...Image via WikipediaIt’s official!

Barcelona supremo Joan Laporta has confirmed that the Catalan club has received bids from AC Milan and Manchester City for star forward Ronaldinho. Laporta has also said that Manchester City’s offer is higher than Milan’s.

If Milan had been in the Champions League this coming season, Ronaldinho’s choice would be rather straightforward. However with the Italians managing only a fifth-place finish in the Serie A last season, there is no lure of European football (unless you belong to that really tiny minority that follows the UEFA Cup).

City meanwhile have shown signs of wanting to break from their cursed mid-table finishes in the Premier League. The appointment of Mark Hughes, and the signing of Brazilian striker Jo, coupled with the vigour that they have showed in the pursuit of Ronaldinho are strong indicators of a willingness to move forward.

Ronnie himself might still want to go to Milan, wanting to link up with star names such as Kaka, Inzaghi and Dida. And it will be down to the Battle of the Premiers. Milan are owned by Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi. Manchester City are owned by Thaksin Shinawatra, former Prime Minister of Thailand. Which Premier’s money will go the distance?

Deco at Chelsea - Video and Interview

Portugese playmaker Deco recently joined the premier league titans Chelsea last week. The arrival of Deco followed Scolari’s taking over as coach. Deco had worked with Scolari for the Portugese team, where he had a good rapport with the Brazilian coach. Deco was thrilled about playing for Chelsea and promised Chelsea fans that he would aid in the club lifting the first ever champions league trophy.

Deco was instrumental in earlier Barca-Chelsea encounters. Barca and Chelsea faced each other in 3 consecutive champions league games and Deco was a major force for Barca playing against his fomer Porto coach Mourinho.

It will be great to watch Deco team up with the likes of Ballack, Essien and Lampard. Definitely, he will add more flair and pace to the Chelsea midfield.

Chelsea on the prowl: Robinho, Ronaldinho…

Ronaldinho, St.Image via WikipediaHaving lost out narrowly to Manchester United on both the domestic and European front, Chelsea are intent not just on reclaiming the League crown and challenging for European honours, but on adding the flair that has been lacking in their play for many years.

In this respect, their first move came a few weeks ago with the announcement that Portugal manager Luiz Felipe Scolari would take over at Stamford Bridge. And now, Chelsea, who signed Portuguese playmaker Deco from Barcelona yesterday, are linked with three Brazilians - Robinho, Kaka and Ronaldinho.

Robinho’s agent, Vagner Ribeiro, has already confirmed that he has held talks with Chelsea over the possible transfer of the Real Madrid striker. Ribeiro feels that Madrid are undervaluing the Brazilian, and are intent only on using him as a makeweight in a transfer involving Cristiano Ronaldo. Chelsea might make a bid in the region of 35 million pounds for Robinho.

Kaka has welcomed Ronaldinho to join him at AC Milan, but both players are linked with moves to Chelsea. While a move for Kaka seems improbable at this time, the same cannot be said of Ronaldinho, who has evinced interest in joining Scolari at Chelsea.

If Robinho arrives, Chelsea might let go of Didier Drogba. Frank Lampard’s future seems to be away from the club as well. The club might also take Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko off their payrolls.

Interesting times at the Bridge.

Why Ronaldo must stay?

Manchester United vs Chelsea

The transfer fee that is doing the rounds today for Cristiano Ronaldo is 80 million pounds! A whopping 80 million pounds! Any club might be tempted by such a windfall, so there is no doubt why the press and everyone else is considering a Ronaldo move from Manchester United to Real Madrid to be only a matter of time.

However, there are more than just monetary reasons why United should hold on to the man from Madeira. Till recently, the Spanish and Italian leagues held a virtual monopoly over players from the Iberian peninsula and Latin America. As the Portuguese league is not considered an elite football league, at least not in the same rung as its Italian, Spanish and English equivalents, clubs from Spain and Italy, especially the former could expect to snap up top player from Portugal.

And the absence of language and cultural barrier facilitated a player’s move from South America to Spain. Not to mention that the English Premier League is seen as playing a different kind of football - faster(?), more physical and with referees offering little protection to players.

Now with the emergence of the Premier League as the gold standard soccer league, players from all over the world are considering a move to England. Jose Mourinho’s reign as manager of Chelsea meant that quite a few players from Portugal were brought to England.

Manchester United did have some sort of a negative reputation considering that the then Argentina captain Juan Sebastian Veron’s sojourn at Old Trafford did not go very well. Veron’s countryman, the defender Gabriel Heinze did impress everyone during his first season, but an injury and poor performances led to a rather acrimonious exit from Old Trafford, when United snubbed Liverpool’s advances for the left-back to sell him to Real.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo settled very well at the club, and the way the club helped him overcome the criticism and boos he received over his role in Wayne Rooney’s dismissal in the 2006 World Cup were heartwarming. The increasingly pivotal role that Carlos Quieroz has taken on in the coaching hierarchy at United, what with Sir Alex Ferguson himself considering Quieroz his possible successor has put United in a good position to attract talents from Portugal, which has emerged as one of the footballing heavyweights. This was evident in the way United were able to engineer a double coup successfully by bringing in Nani and Anderson both from F.C. Porto last summer. It was widely reported that Ronaldo helped the two young midfielders settle down to life in the north of England.

If Ronaldo does leave United to the warmer climes of the Spanish capital, it will throw a dent in United efforts to bring in more players from their feeder clubs in Portugal. Now, with Luiz Felipe Scolari taking over the reins at Stamford Bridge, the Red Devils face even stiffer competition in bringing players to their fold. Add to this some reports that suggest Carlos Quieroz might replace Scolari as the new Portuguese national coach. Quieroz, who has been some sort of a father figure to the likes of Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson, might complicate United’s position if he departs.

Moreover, if Ronaldo does leave, it will only buttress the belief that Real Madrid are the bigger club. Though United were recently confirmed the world’s richest club, and also their form and style of gameplay in the past couple of seasons have been the best in Europe (culminating in their winning the Champions League at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow last month), Real will psychologically go one up on United if they get their man.

So, despite the economic sense that a Ronaldo transfer makes, and the possibility of bringing in more players, Man United should their best to hold on their prized possession.

2008 Champions League Final: Manchester United vs Chelsea

Video highlights of the 2008 UEFA Champions League final between English clubs, Manchester United and Chelsea, played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Manchester United, for all their triumphs in England, have won the European honours just twice before. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, who had already pipped Chelsea to the Premier League, won on the 50th year of the Munich disaster. Cristiano Ronaldo headed home to put United up 1-0, but Frank Lampard responded for the London club to make it 1-1 before half-time.

In the penalty shootout, Ronaldo missed, and when John Terry stepped up to the spot, Chelsea were on the brink of victory. Terry slipped as he took his penalty, thus throwing the Red Devils a lifeline that they gleefully accepted. Nicolas Anelka’s effort was saved by Edwin van der Sar to give United a 6-5 victory. United completed their domestic and European double. Didier Drogba was sent off towards the end of extra time for unsporting conduct.
