Community shield- Portsmouth urge Ferguson to buy striker

Welcome back! Check out our new videos and news updates!

The 2008-2009 season kicked off with Manchester United clinching a shoot-out win over a rather unimpressive Portsmouth side. United were dominant throughout the game, but could not get the ball past keeper James without the 42-goal scorer Cristiano Ronaldo. United have to come to terms with it, Rooney might not play the first few games, Ronaldo might not get to play 5-10 games. Giggs partnered Tevez in what was an aggressive but not-on-target strike force.
Time to wake up - Harry. Portsmouth’s much talked strike force of Defoe and Crouch, worth 18 million pounds could not even get a single attempt on target. United defense and midfield was right up to the expectation, but that does not offer any excuse for Defoe and Crouch. It will be a crucial season for the England strikers to prove their worth.
The game went into penalty shoot-out and 3 of the 4 Portsmouth players missed the target. It is the second successive Penalty shoot-out win for United after their victory over Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final at Moscow.
Overall, a rather un-impressive start for both the teams.

Community Shield Preview-Manchester United vs Portsmouth

Manchester United face Portsmouth in the first major footballing activity of the season. Manchester United are bolstered by the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo will be staying with them for atleast one year. Gary Neville is set to captain the side after a long lay-off due to injury. Ronaldo, Hargreaves and Saha are out with injury. Saha is also linked with a move to Sunderland.
Portsmouth have a strong side with Defoe and Crouch forming the new strike pair.

My take: Manchester United 3 - 1 Portsmouth

Teams:
Manchester United (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Neville, Brown, R Da Silva, Ferdinand, Vidic, O’Shea, Evans, Evra, Silvestre, F Da Silva, Nani, Carrick, Scholes, Fletcher, Gibson, Possebon, Giggs, Martin, Tevez, Campbell.

Portsmouth (from): James, Johnson, Campbell, Distin, Hreidarsson, Utaka, Diop, Pedro Mendes, Kranjcar, Crouch, Little, Sahar, Diarra, Defoe, Davis, Kanu, Wilson, Duffy, Lauren, Nugent, Mvuemba, Cranie, Ashdown.

Transfer round up - Keane and Johnson set to complete moves

With the premiership clubs getting ready for the kick off of the 2008-2009 season, the signing of transfer targets is being done aggressively. Liverpool are set to exit the transfer market with the signing of Spurs frontman Robbie Keane for a massive £18m. Tottenham are planning to use the money to fund the move for Arshavin. Tottenham are firmly resisting any offers from United and Barcelona for their star striker Berbatov.
Andrew Johnson is all set to sign for Fulham, as Sunderland’s bid is considered as an undervalue for the player. Sunderland have shifted their attention to Manchester United striker Saha, with Roy Keane very keen on the frontman, the deal could be finalized anytime this week. PSG are also interested in the striker.

Countdown to Kick off

With the premier league kick-off less than a month away, club managers are busy working ways to lure some top signings. Compared to last few years, this year’s transfer activity has been very dull (thanks to Roman Abrahamovic for busy activities in the past few years). Top clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool are yet to make any big signing for this season. Though there have been few signings in the past few weeks, the signing of big names like Eto, Kaka, Robinho, Arshavin, Berbatov are still awaited.
Chelsea have already started their pre-season in China with a 4-0 win over Guangzhou Pharmaceutical. Lampard, Wright-Phillips, Kalou and Argentine di Santo scored for Chelsea. Lampard’s stay at Stamford Bridge is not final yet as Jose Mourinho is preparing to sign him for Inter Milan. Manchester United will be as strong as they were during last season if they manage to hold Ronaldo. Arsenal will take new shape with Arsene Wenger still pondering over the transfer market.
In the bottom, Sunderland will have some encouraging news in the next week or so with manager Roy Keane prepared to sign a bunch of players from Tottenham which includes Chimponda and Darrent Bent. Roy is also preparing to sign Darren Fletcher from his old club Manchester United. The new boys Hull are also busy in transfer market as they are on the verge of signing few star players. No activities in Newcastle camp after their disappointing performance in last season. They would have to rely on Michael Owen to score as Viduka and Martins were ineffective during latter half of the 08 season.
Every game will be important - well, I have to say that after the close finish last season. I would expect Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea to fight it out for the top spot as I think Liverpool are yet to learn to be consistent. So..who is it going to be… Scolari or Ferguson or Arsene Wenger?

Boswinga: Gamst is God

Chelsea’s summer signing Jose Boswinga, the FC Porto defender today revealed that he used to watch 3 to 4 matches from the English Premier League each weekend, and that he is a passionate supporter of English football.

That’s all fine, but what came next was baffling! Boswinga stated that, of all the opponents that he would come across this season, Blackburn Rovers’ Morten Gamst Pedersen is the one he would fear the most!

Not Cristiano Ronaldo or Wayne Rooney. Nor Anfield sensation Fernando Torres, or one of the Gunners. But the Norwegian, Gamst! Is he that good?
